Common Causes of Indoor Air Pollution

Indoor air quality (IAQ) problems are common for many homeowners in St. Petersburg, FL. Whether due to heavy foot traffic, pets or poor air circulation, there are many ways that moisture, odors and pollutants can create an uncomfortable home environment. Here are four causes of indoor air pollution and some ideas for how to get rid of them:

Odors From Various Sources

The first issue that affects indoor air quality in your home – and the one that you’ll notice right away – is foul odors. Funky smells can come from a variety of sources:

  • Dirty laundry.
  • Indoor/outdoor pets.
  • Cooking odors.
  • Dirty dishes and sink.
  • Outdoor odors.
  • Old furniture and boxes.

Increased humidity in some areas of the house can also contribute to musty odors. Dehumidifiers can help remove excess moisture from the air and reduce some types of odors in your home. Aim to
balance your humidity between 40 and 60 percent.

Pollen and Other Pollutants

Seasonal allergies can hit throughout the year when pollen blows through your neighborhood and enters your home. But other allergens sometimes lurk in your home all year long as they dig into your carpets, window coverings and upholstery. Good ventilation, air filtration and regular HVAC maintenance are often your best bet for removing these annoying pollutants from your home. Changing your air filter monthly is good, too.

Pet Dander, Dirt and Dust Accumulation

Pet fur, pet dander, dust and dirt have a way of accumulating in the cracks and crevices in most homes, not to mention how they can stick to just about every kind of fabric known to man. But with a consistent house cleaning plan – and deep cleaning on occasion – you can greatly reduce the levels of these contaminants.

However, some particles will linger in the air no matter how often you vacuum and dust. That’s why many homeowners invest in whole-home air purification systems.

If your home has IAQ problems, contact Viking Air immediately. We’ll help you diagnose the source of those odors and indoor air pollution and help you find solutions that are right for you.
